Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some FAQs people usually ask about us and our work.
What do I need to know about my business taxes?
You need to know about the type of taxes that the business is registered for and the different deadlines for submission of the relevant returns to SARS.
When are income tax returns due for my business and how should I register and submit?
The business income taxes comprises of provisional taxes which are submitted every 6 months from the start of the business financial year. The final income tax return is due at the end of the 12 months are the conclusion of the previous financial year. Every new company that is registered through CIPC is automatically registered for income tax and they need to submit returns even if they have not started trading.
Is CIPC returns the same as submitting annual returns at SARS?
The two returns are not the same. Every registered company must submit an annual return to CIPC to declare that the business is still existing and also submit tax returns to SARS separately.
What do I need to know about COIDA and UIF for my business?
COIDA is insurance for injuries or diseases that occur to employees in the course of carrying out work and each business is encouraged to register for COIDA and submit returns annually. UIF is for unemployment insurance benefits and each business that advances earnings to employees is required to register with the department of labour and submit monthly returns.
When do I need to pay VAT for my business and how do I get a refund from SARS for VAT?
Vat is paid every two months if a taxpayer registered on an invoice basis and every month for those taxpayers registered under a cash basis. You obtain a refund if the vat you paid on the costs is more than the vat you received on your sales. SARS needs the necessary documentation to prove that you are entitled to a refund and this is where the services of an accountant or registered tax practitioner would make the process less daunting and seamless as SARS sometimes can make it difficult for one to obtain a refund if the documents and the vat returns are not properly submitted and present to them.
What is provisional tax and who should be liable to pay it?
Provisional tax is the same as income tax but it allows a taxpayer to spread the income tax liability in 2 or 3 payments. Any person who receives income different from a salary is liable to pay provisional tax.
